A mini-guide to natural deodorants

At ecobeagle we pride ourselves on making it easy for people to make the switch to products that cause less environmental harm. But which product to choose? This mini-guide looks at the pros and cons of the different types of natural deodorant we offer, to help you choose the one that’s right for you.

Natural stick deodorant – this offers the closest equivalent to the conventional roll-on, and is applied in a similar way. Our chosen brand is Your Nature, which is supplied in a cardboard tube with a push-up bottom and comes in both fragranced and fragrance-free versions.

Natural cream deodorant – supplied in an aluminium pot, a small amount is simply rubbed into the armpit. Our choice is made by The Loving Nature and comes in a wide range of fragrances.

Natural crystal deodorant – this is a simple block of potassium salt; in our case packaged in natural cork by Biork. By wetting the rock and rubbing it under the armpit it creates an invisible salt film that sits on the surface of the skin.

None of these natural deodorants will stop you from sweating – which is, after all, a natural process that serves an important purpose in regulating body temperature and eliminating toxins. What they do is neutralise the bacteria that can cause body odour.

I have used all of these products and can recommend them all. My daily preference is for the natural stick, as I appreciate the convenient application and enjoy the fragrance. However, I use the others in specific situations; the travel size and waterproof packaging of the natural cream deodorant is perfect for holidays and festivals and I use crystal when I wear silk, as the natural oils in the other two products tend to transfer to the fabric (it will wash out, but I prefer not to wash my clothes every time they are worn).

Each of these products keeps me fresh and fragrant, even after exercise, when used as part of a regular personal hygiene routine None of the products leave marks on other fabrics in the way that conventional deodorants sometimes do, and of course they are all much kinder to your skin as they don’t contain any harsh chemicals.
